1985 Mercedes-Benz 500SL
The SL (Super Leicht) badge is one of the most iconic in the Mercedes-Benz lineage, dating back to 1954. The original 300SL was raced very successfully by legends such as Moss and Fangio in events like the Mille Miglia, Carrera Panamericana, Le Mans, and Nürburgring. The SL name also gave us the original, beautiful Gullwing — often described as the first true supercar.
While Mercedes has evolved the SL’s design language and purpose over time, turning it into the car you’d choose to drive down the coast to the South of France rather than set endurance race records, there is still no doubting its performance pedigree.
This R107 SL500 from 1985 would have to be one of the best in the world. It has been refurbished at significant expense, with most mechanical components either replaced or rebuilt — including suspension, brakes, steering rack, switchgear, rubbers, and interior trim. The paintwork is immaculate, and all wood trim and upholstery are as close to perfect as you’ll find. The 5.0L V8 still pulls strongly, delivering its 242 hp to the rear wheels via a silky-smooth automatic transmission. This is the perfect car for wafting at pace.
The folding soft top works perfectly, and the hard top supplied with the car is in equally excellent condition.
Having covered just over 13,000 km since the restoration, this car should provide its new caretaker many years of enjoyable motoring.
Asking $89,995 or best offer — significantly below replacement cost.
Things to Note:
A new WOF is being carried out within the next fortnight and will be current for the new owner.
While CarJam records the vehicle as being in miles, it is unquestionably in kilometers and has been since leaving the factory.
